Y.M.C.A. 3 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sun 04 Sep 2011 at 12.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report The Mens 2nds travelled to Claremont Road on Sunday in search of vital points in the ever-increasing dog fight of Division 7. Alas the search was in vain...

Winning the toss, Gordie chose to bat first on the mat. Openers Gary Hansell Jnr (43) and Ian Walshe (27) put on a steady partnership of 57 before Ian hit a long hop straight to point. He could have hit it almost anywhere on the pitch, but it didn't need anyone else to point this out to him - the look on his face said it all. These things happen to us all though.

Sean Dalton arrived at the crease but with the rain beginning to fall, popped a ball up and was caught and bowled for 4. Neil Vorster (48 not out off 64 balls) came in at four and knocked the ball around nicely before Gary was (not for the first time this season) unfortunate to be dismissed. A crisp drive by Vossie was deflected by the bowler onto the stumps, finding Gary to be out of his ground.

With the rain too strong to handle, the teams came off and tea - well, pizza - was taken. There is something ironic about the Young Mens Christian Association being sponsored by Hells's Pizza company...

So after a total delay of an hour and and a half, play recommenced. Zak Khan was adjudged LBW shortly afterwards even though he felt the ball might well have gone over the top. Dáire O'Neill came out and in need of quick runs didn't muck about, making 19 off 22 balls.

With the score on 141 for 6 off 39 overs, Gordie (24 not out off 25 balls) joined Vossie with a total near 200 being the target. Some lusty blows from Vossie, together with well judged running helped the score along to 193 for 6 off 45 overs.

YM's inninngs got off to a flyer with boundaries all over the place until in the 4th over, Dáire O'Neill (5-0-37-2) tempted the batsman into a swipe only to top edge a ball that was snaffled by Justin Wall. Ian Walshe (9-0-34-1) then exacted some revenge by dismissing the YM No. 3 batsman by dishing up a good old fashioned long hop which Zak Khan held onto brilliantly on the boundary. A few overs later, Vossie induced a top edge from the remaining YM opener that was pocketed by Justin. Shortly afterwards, Vossie found the edge of the YM skipper's bat and safely into Paul McGreivy's hands at slip. Game on....

Alas, the next pair brought YM to within 14 runs of victory when Gary Hansell Jnr. held onto a steepler in the covers. In fairness, they batted very well, but enjoyed their share of luck, notably when the ball made contact with Tector's rather wooden sounding (and looking) pad and was pouched by Ger Horn behind the stumps. "NOT OUT!!" was the response of the umpire. One felt like apologising for having the cheek to appeal in the first place...

Another wicket came with 6 runs to win when Ian Walshe held onto a sharp catch at gully, but it was too little too late and YM came off deserved winners.

They had their share of fortune, but this young YM team is probably the strongest team we've faced this year. The reality is that we didn't (or perhaps couldn't) exert any pressure on the batsmen and the telling statistic is that Paul McGreivy bowled the only maiden of the YM innings. Remember, dots build pressure, and pressure brings wickets..

Thanks go again to John Smith for umpiring his final game of the season, as he goes away on holiday next weekend. John has done his fair share of umpiring this season for the 2nds and on behalf of the team, I would like to thank John for stepping in and helping us out. We look forward to seeing him next season.

Sincerest thanks also to Gerry Fennell for scoring. Gerry seemed to have got a lesson in the art of scoring by laptop (though he did actually use the old fashioned book method) in this match, as he witnessed YM's scorer click and press his way through the match. Don't forget - when in doubt - Ctrl, Alt, Delete!!!
