North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI v Merrion 5 on Sun 28 Aug 2011 at 12.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report The Mens 2nds welcomed league winners Merrion to The Maws on Sunday.

Losing the toss, North Kildare found themselves in the field. Openers Paul McGreivy (9-3-26-4) and Paddy Wall (8.5-1-22-2) applied pressure from the off. To be honest, if the skipper had to choose one player from this team to catch a swirling ball hit high in the sky - it would be Paddy Wall. However, the world's easiest caught and bowled chance was dished up by one of the Merrion openers and spilt by Paddy. Cries of disbelief (mainly from Paddy himself) were just about finished by the time Paddy delivered the next ball which riddled the batsman's stumps, leaving Merrion 9-1 after 4 overs.

Great support in the field and from Sean Dalton (5-0-18-0) and Dáire O'Neill (6-1-10-1) meant that Merrion were never allowed to accelerate. Rohan Madhavan (8-2-24-3) managed to acquire some wickets using the old fashioned pie chucking method, meaning that balls that should have been put into the canal were sliced into the grateful hands of Ger and Justin. Merrion's innings came to an end with their total on 105.

In response, a half century opening stand by Gary Hansell Jnr (27) and Ger Horn (28) calmed any nerves there may have been. Mind you, when both openers fell quite quickly, the door opened ever so slightly for Merrion with the score on 62 for 2.

In stepped Paddy Wall (17 not out) and Sean Dalton (12) who put on 20 runs for the next wicket before Sean was adjudged LBW. Zak came in and he and Paddy got us to within a run of victory before Zak swiped across a straight one and had his timbers disturbed. Dáire O'Neill came in and finished the job off next ball to complete the victory by 6 wickets with 32 overs to spare.

Thanks go to Gerry Fennell for looking after the scorebook, to John Smith for umpiring, to Gillian Machin for setting up the teas and to Michael Curran of FÁS for his excellent and much appreciated work on the wicket. FÁS get very little official recognition for their work, so here's an official thank you on behalf of North Kildare Mens 2nds. It just goes to show with some proper guidance what can be achieved with these wickets - once the crows allow us!!

Well done to all. A great all round team effort.
