North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI v Leinster 4 on Sun 07 Aug 2011 at 1.30
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost by 35 runs

Match report Off the back of last week’s resounding victory to the same opposition NK looked in good form going into this fixture.

However with the ever changing availability and only one front line bowler meant the same margin of all out for 79 was never likely to be on the cards. With the weather forecast due for heavy rain 3-6pm threatening and the first 45 mins lost, the game was reduced to 35 overs.

Fielding 1st the 2’s made a steady start. Opening the bowling for the first time for the NK 2nd’s James Machin bowled with experience and control beyond his 15 years with figures of 7-1-35-1, making a steady start. However as per last week the opener Kumar was proving difficult to remove with the odd bad ball swatted to point and extra cover. This time he gave just one chance in the 30’s although the umpire insisted he was actually wearing wooden pads !!!

The breakthrough came with 77 runs on the board via a good high catch from Sean Dalton. The middle order was reasonably contained by the inexperienced attack. However, we lacked wicket taking deliveries and the Leinster run rate was pushed up by Kumars innings of 87, including quick singles and the odd boundary.

With the rest of the leinster middle order having license for carefree hitting (slogging) on the NK mat. With some good death bowling by Rohan Madhavan, in only his second appreance of the season restricted the final score to 193, this was going to be tough ask with this NK young side.

A positive start from Ger Horn (included a 6…Leinster have since ask for a drug test on his bat !!)of 25 was balanced out by an unlucky exit by his partner Gary, so this brought “Dollars” to the crease. Could Sean improve on his promising talent throughout the year with glimpses of some double figure scores?

Today showed more application with some finely timed cover drives, pulls and slog sweeps to the midwicket fence even a 6 so it was no surprise Sean recorded his maiden 50 for the 2nd team. Well done Sean 1st of many. He was bowled shortly afterwards (54) as the run chase was up at 8 an over with Beattie, Brady and Madhavan perishing in the attempt for quick runs, the rate required was up at over Ten.

With the return of Leinster opener Dixit, Justin Wall & Paul McGreivy found the task just that bit tougher. But when Dixit was deposited one bounce over the rope first ball and from ten off his retuning over, the home team had an outside chance. This pair added 37 runs for the 8th wicket which sadly came too little too late, North Kildare falling short by 35 runs.

In what proved to be a good spirited and closely fought game, it just proved out of reach for NK’s young bowling attack.

Many thanks to Áine O’Connor for scoring and once again to John Smith whose umpiring was excellent. These kinds of contributions are much appreciated by the team.
