Pembroke 5 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 3rd XI on Sun 25 Apr 2010 at
North Kildare Cricket Club Won NK win by 6 wickets.
Match report
The thirds continued their excellent start to the season with a great win over Pembroke in the 'Broke on Sunday. Barra won the toss and inserted Pembroke hoping to restrict them to a nice small total. Things started well with Neil Vorster (4-22 off 8) bowling one of the openers for a golden duck and continued in the same vein as he broke through on regular occasions. From the other end Cameron Futter (0-38 off 8) was unlucky not to pick up a wicket with a couple of difficult catches going down of his bowling. Pembroke stalwart Pierre got things going for the home side drilling some drives and hitting two big sixes off Gary Hansell Jnr. (1-30 off 8) who bowled very well throughout. He eventually fell for 38, strangled by Barra Mac Niocaill (4-36 off 6) who mixed the good and the bad in his two spells. Eventually Pembroke got a good partnership going and put on 72 for the 8th wicket. Quinton Bourke (0-20 off 4) bowled without luck in the middle overs and with some of the thirds ground fielding leaving a little bit to be desired the 'Broke were closing in on a good score. Barra eventually got the breakthrough and picked up the other key batsman when coming back for his second spell. This just left it to Harish Pillai (1-17 off 6) to clean bowl the last man to finish the innings. Pembroke had made a formidable total of 188 in 39.1 overs.
Needing 4.7 runs an over the thirds knew they were going to have to bat very well to get it. Barra and Quinton opened and things started quite slowly with the 'Broke opening bowlers bowling good tight opening spells. At 14 off 8 Q and B had done the hard part and seen off the openers but the big question was could they up the run-rate? The answer was an emphatic Yes! They proceeded to put together a stand of 156 at better than a run a ball. Quinton was first to his fifty reaching it off 45 balls. Barra followed, reaching his off 80 balls. With weather around the lads were keen to get things over as soon as possible and continued to rattle along picking up boundaries at regular intervals and knocking 1s and 2s with the field spread. Barra eventually fell, L.B.W. to the opening opener bowler's second spell, for 57 (94 balls, 7 4s) leaving 29 to get. Quinton fell to the same bowler not long afterwards for 81 (83 balls, 12 4s) L.B.W. again. Cameron Futter was out bowled for 2 and Gary Hansell Jnr. was bowled for 0 but a calm Neil Vorster finished the job to with 26*.
So superb win in adversity means the that altough the Thirds know they've a lot of room for improvement, particularly in their ground fielding, they march on to Rush next weekend with a record of 2 wins thus far this season.
