Laois 2 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 2nd XI on Sat 22 May 2010 at
North Kildare Cricket Club Won by 4 Runs

Match report It’s a long drive to Laois, and it’s a long way back after a defeat (see 2009 season report of this fixture)...but it’s not so far when you've just bloody won in the "The Graveyard”! Laois is normally such a godforsaken place to play; windy, bare, sparse amenities and not really like playing cricket in a cricket club. However this year was better as we had some good support and glorious sunshine making a more NK type atmosphere to be honest. The Walshe Dog liked it anyway..he top scored with a fantastic 144 not out, he was simply brilliant.

Losing the toss NK were asked to bowl on the notoriously hard and batter friendly mat, no grass wickets here I'm afraid...ever! It was a fairly good start for NK with Laois at 95-4 at drinks a chase of perhaps 200 at most looked likely. However it was Cosby who made a real game of it as he dug in and notched a score of 100 not out. He and Sheeva (60) stuck together well for a stand of 135 after a very weak looking top 4 batters had got Laois into a bit of a hole. A cameo from Jaz netted him 31 and left a total of 242 to chase, probably about par for this mat but 30 to 40 more than we should have let them get.

The chase started well with Barra (25) & Walshy putting on 58 in the first 15. After Baz departed Clarke looked decent for his 13 but went after one a little too wide and scooped it to Cover. Holland, in typical fashion, blustered his way to 30, including a huge straight 6. Pyne contributed 25 in a stand of 49 with Walshe but wandered across too far to off and was "given" LBW. Young lad Dalton (4) helped add another 20 or so and then Withey "toed" a couple and brought it home with 4 balls to spare. It was a game that swung in it’s a favour a couple of times but while the "Old Pro" was at the crease somehow the win never seemed in doubt. As stated earlier it was a great knock, and deserved reward for the man who has worked hard to return to form after a season or two in the wilderness. Very Well Done Ian "the Dog" Walshe.
