North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Oak Hill on Sun 04 Jul 2010 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 8 Wickets (1/25pts)

Match report On Sunday the 1sts lost their position atop Division 4 after a disappointing 8 wicket defeat to visitors Oak Hill. Missing no less than 4 key players for this important game, 3 who bat in the top 5, a very different looking 1st team batting line-up was bowled out for a meagre total of 143 in 27 overs. Captain Neavyn lost the toss and wasn't surprised when the oppo captain put NK in to bat on a slightly damp wicket. The pitch played slow and low but was in fact a reasonably OK pitch to bat on and certainly it wasn't to blame for the poor total. What was to blame was the NK batsmens seeming inability to deal with the seam bowling of oppo opening bowler Kashyap, who claimed no less than 7 (?!) wickets, 6 (?!) of which came via the direct route, bowled. Walshe (4) was first to go trapped lbw (note: not bowled) by Kashyap. There was a murmuring that maybe Walshe had done enough to be hit outside the line. 10-1. Off-days for Manjeet Singh (4) this season have been few and far.................actually there hasn't been any really, but it wasn't to be the 'Masters' day. After getting off the mark by slapping that Kashyap fella through the covers for a beautiful boundary, Manjeet fell two balls later bowled through the gate by Kashyap. A surprise and a big setback. 14-2. Hansell (4) was next in and he and Neavyn steadied the dinghy somewhat with a stand of 21 before Hansell missed a full straight one from Kashyap to be bowled. 37-3. Ul-Haq (2) was next to go when he chipped military medium pacer Fitzsimons straight to mid-on for a simple catch. A very soft dismissal. 40-4. Walia (2) missed a full straight one and was bowled by Kashyap. Clarke (0) missed a full straight one and was bowled by Kashyap. Rob Beattie (0) missed a full straightish one and was bowled by Kashyap. Vorster (1) missed a full straight one and you're probably starting to get the picture. 49-8. Opener Neavyn meanwhile was still there, wondering what exactly was this Kashyap chap doing that he was missing. Finally Neavyn found in Wasif Ali a partner who was willing, like Neavyn, to eh, not be bowled by cash strapped. Together the pair took the 1sts into the realms of respectability with a stand of 64. Wasif expressed his intentions to hang around and bat sensibly given the situation, so he walloped 40 runs off just 18 balls including 3x6s. Unfortunately Wasif's knock came to a logical conclusion when he was trapped lbw by Fitzsimons, so off he strode understandably wondering what all the fuss was about. One of his 6s came off that chap. 113-9. Sethi (19* 2x4, 1x6) joined Neavyn and the pair took the score on to 143 when drinks were taken. Could Neavyn go on to make a big 50 ably supported by Sethi? Could the 1sts get to 200? No and no. First over after drinks saw Neavyn (42) bowled by left-arm spinner Hastie when he left one outside his off stick and the ball had the audacity to spin back in a yard (maybe less). 143 all out. Here's a rare one. Neavyn faced the first and last ball of the innings. With or without some key players this was a poor effort from NK but at least a recovery from 49-8 to 143 had given the team something to bowl at.

However it was always going to take something a bit special from the NK bowling attack to defend this total against a strong Oak Hill batting line-up. The 1sts had to wait till the 8th over for the breakthrough when Varun Walia (5-0-25-1) had oppo opener R. Andrews (16) caught smartly by Rob Beattie at 3rd slip. 32-1. A 2nd wicket stand of 98 between opener Joyce (40) and no.3 Cannon (49*) put the result beyond any doubt. Wasif Ali (4-2-11-1) bowled well in his short spell and he did at least secure a point for NK when he had Joyce sky one to be caught by Beattie in the mid-wicket area.

The 1sts will be determined to bounce back in their next game.
