North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Malahide 2 on Sun 06 Jun 2010 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 5 Wickets (23/25pts)

Match report On a wet and overcast Sunday the 1sts retained their position on top of Division 4 with an excellent 5 wicket win over visitors Malahide. This was down to some very fine individual performances, most notably that of Phipps who, following on from his massive knock against Phoenix, produced another outstanding innings of 124 not out as NK chased down a target of 269 with 10 balls to spare. Captain Neavyn won the toss and, sensing the pitch would offer his bowlers something early doors, elected to field first. The innings couldn't possibly have gotten off to a worst start for NK however.

After 13 overs those victorious post match pints seemed a long way away. Malahide got off to an absolute flier courtesy of some very wayward bowling from a seriously off form Wasif Ali (7-0-65-0) and Satchwell (1-0-15-0). It was surprising to see two of the clubs best bowlers so out of form on the day. As a result the oppo put on a ridiculous 33 runs in the first 2 overs. After 13 overs the score had moved on to 94-0. Thankfully Varun Walia (10-3-28-3) was on form and he produced a superb spell of consistently accurate bowling. Taking over from Satchwell in the 4th over, Varun bowled straight through his 10 overs and was instrumental in getting NK back in the game. It was he who got the breakthrough when oppo opener Z. Kelly (37) drove a fullish ball straight to Neavyn at mid-off for a comfortable take. Soon after the rain came and a delay of 40 minutes ensued. Credit is due to the umpires here as there was no hanging around, as soon as the rain stopped, play resumed in perfectly safe conditions. NK didn't have to wait long after the restart for the next wicket to fall. Varun struck again albeit with one of his less impressive deliveries when oppo no.3 J. Byrne (7) sliced a full toss straight to Vorster in the gully region for a good catch. Varun struck again soon after, claiming the key wicket of oppo opener and skipper A. Pyne (41) lbw. Some suggest Pyne was not absolutely stitched. 114-3 off 20. Meanwhile Vorster (9-0-48-0) had replaced Wasif at the other end and did a fine job in a 7 over spell that provided good support for Varun. Neavyn then turned to his spinners Manjeet Singh (10-0-45-1) and Imran Ul-Haq (10-0-39-1) both of whom bowled straight through their 10 overs. The pair did an excellent job of restricting the oppos no.4 and no.5 to mostly just 1s and 2s. In fact between Singh and Ul-Haq only 7 boundaries were conceded in their combined 20 overs. However luck was eluding the pair until finally in the 38th over Imran trapped oppo no.5 Boyne (26) plum lbw bringing an end to a stand of 77. As the saying goes, one brings two. A few overs later Manjeet got a well deserved wicket and an important one when oppo no.4 Sheady (49) tickled one off his pads and straight into the gloves of keeper Clarke who had positioned himself well for the take. 205-5 off 41. At this point NK had obviously recovered well after the horrendous start but it was to be the visitors who had the better of the remaining 9 overs when they added another 63 runs. The oppos no.6 Santosh (35) and no.7 Chase (31) put together a stand of 58 before both fell in the last over. Phipps (2-0-11-1), bowling off just a few paces due to back problems, did a good job at the death and removed Santosh's off peg and Chase followed a few balls later run out. One more run was added off the last ball leaving Malahide with a final total of 268-7 off their 50 overs. It's fair to say that the 1sts would have taken this target when the oppo were 94-0 after 13 overs but the reality is that had it not been for some very poor fielding NK could have been chasing considerably less. 30 runs, if not more, were given away in the field. Also a very disappointing 34 extras including no less than 27 wides were conceded. Needless to say the 1sts will be looking to greatly improve in this area for their next encounter.

NK felt that Malahide had put a good but not great total on the board and were confident in their ability to chase down the target of 269 but of course it would need some top batting to do so. A brisk start was needed and the 1sts knew they couldn't afford to get bogged down at any point during the innings. Openers Neavyn and Clayton started brightly with 19 runs coming off the first 4 overs but Neavyn (10 off 13) was to fall in the 5th over to seamer S. Cassidy. The captain was very annoyed with himself when he poked at one just outside his off peg and guided the ball to gully for a simple catch. Had he hit the ball with as much intent as he did the traffic cone at the back of the clubhouse it might have been a different story. 19-1. Clayton and Phipps, aka Team Kiwi, responded well to this setback taking the score on to 48 by the 10th over before Clayton (17 off 31) joined Neavyn on the sidelines after playing on to seamer A. Kamal. 48-2. This brought together the 1sts two in form batsman with Manjeet Singh arriving at the crease to join Phipps. Together the pair batted NK into a very strong position with which to go on and win the game in a quality partnership of 119. Manjeet (47 off ?, dots Goodfellow?) fell in the 34th over trapped lbw by the oppos left arm spinner Boyne. Manjeet’s consistency this season has been superb and it was another fine knock from the Master who rotated the strike and kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely throughout. 167-3 off 34. The 1sts now needed 102 off 96 balls for victory and, with Phipps dominating all the oppo bowlers and approaching a second consecutive league hundred and with the likes of Satchwell, Ul-Haq and Walshe still to come, were favourites to win. However Satchwell (2), who certainly doesn’t have too many off days, suffered one here. He followed soon after Manjeet when, looking to hit seamer Gibbons over the top, he failed to clear mid on. The batsmen had crossed to give Phipps the strike and he promptly hit the next two balls for 7 runs. A brilliant response to the big loss of Satchwell. 181-4 off 37. This brought Ul-Haq to the crease. Together he and Phipps were to bring the team home, well almost, in a cracking stand of 94. The pair took the score to 210 by the end of the 42nd over leaving NK needing 59 off 48 balls or 7.375 an over. Tense times. The 43rd over was a great one for NK yielding 17 runs off the accurate seamer Gibbons. Phipps and Ul-Haq were determined to avoid a tight finish. Phipps hit the first two balls for 4 then took a single and when Ul-Haq walloped the next ball for a massive straight six the game was almost up for the oppo. The next 5 overs were smashed for a further 41 runs as Ul-Haq (51 off ?, not many anyway), back to his best, reached his half century. This left NK needing just a mere single off the remaining two overs. Ul-Haq however fell second ball of the penultimate over caught. This gave Walshe, who was chompin at the bit to get out there all along, the chance to hit the winning run, but he didnt because the bowler bowled a wide and the game was over. A watchful innings from the Walshe Dog.

Phipps finished unbeaten on 124. An innings that included 12x4s and 2x6s. He batted for 44 overs, almost 3hrs, and right from the start of his innings he dominated the oppo bowlers. A truly brilliant knock and arguably a better one than the 174 against Phoenix when the pressure of a chase is taken into account. I think it’s fair to say the man is in good touch. Top class batting and great support from Manjeet and especially Ul-Haq at the end under pressure.

A great win no doubt but as always ample room for improvement in certain areas. Man of the Match award goes to Neavyn for not getting in his car to drive to the nearest watering hole after the first two overs of the game.
