North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v Phoenix 2 on Sun 23 May 2010 at 13:00
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 146 Runs (25/25pts)
Match report
On Sunday the 1sts recorded a thumping maximum point victory over visitors Phoenix thanks in no small part to a colossal knock of 174 from Regan Phipps. Some batsmen would be content with a score of 22, Phipps scored 22 fours and 3 sixes in his innings as he tore the Phoenix bowling to shreds. In their last two games NK managed totals of 240 and 238 and on both occasions felt they had more runs in them, so it was that the 1sts, after Captain Neavyn won the toss and decided to bat, set about the job of getting it right with the bat this time around and manage a score of 270-280. We got a few more than that.
No doubt it was a good toss to win. The sunny weather, excellent pitch and fast outfield meant Neavyn had one of the easier decisions he'll have to make this season. Despite this NK lost an early wicket when NK no.2 Imran Ul-Haq (0) edged seamer C. Cavanagh and was caught behind in the first over. 1-1. Opener Neavyn and new man in Phipps ticked the scoreboard over steadily safe in the knowledge that they were building the foundation for a huge total?? Drinks were taken after 18 overs with the score on 62-1. Not exactly rapid scoring then, but, given what was to follow, proof that getting off to a flying start isn't everything. Phipps took 14 balls to get off the mark for example. With Neavyn and Phipps now settled the pair looked to work on improving the run rate to closer to 5 an over after the drinks break with a more attacking approach. By the 27th over the partnership had moved on to 125 and the run rate was now a much healthier looking 4.85. Phoenix then got their breakthrough when a tiring Neavyn (68 off 72, 10x4s) bottom batted a low full toss back to spinner M. Ahmed. 126-2. Some breakthrough................as Manjeet Singh (avg 51.25) strolls in. Phipps and Singh added another 88 runs in only 10 overs with Phipps now in berserker mode, belting boundary after boundary and Singh stroking the ball around in typically classical fashion. Manjeet (28 off 26, 3x4s) fell in the 37th over when he was very unlucky to be adjudged lbw to seamer B. Khan having got a fair bit of bat on the ball. 214-3. Big breakthrough...............as Tom Satchwell strides in. Another 74 runs were added in about 7 overs as Phipps continued to torment the oppo bowlers and Satchwell made the visitors wish they had never got Neavyn out in the first place smashing his way to a 20 ball 35 that included 3 quality straight sixes before falling to spinner T. Ali caught somewhere I can't remember. 288-4. That brought young Ian 'The Dog' Walshe to the crease, whose score of 144* the previous day for the 2nds was evidence that the oppo had got the first of the NK tailenders in. Unfortunately Walshe (0) tried to attack maybe too early and was trapped lbw trying to sweep a full straight one from spinner M. Lunson. 288-6. NK keeper and no.7 Mistri (29* off 25) and Phipps added another 50 runs to take the score well past the 300 mark before Phipps' woolly mammoth of an innings finally came to an end.
174 off approx 150 balls. 22 fours. 3 sixes and a pleasure for all who saw it. Awesome stuff and I suggest easily the best innings ever from a NK player.
NK weren't finished yet though. Mistri and Walia added a further 19 runs off the remaining 8 balls to leave the 1sts with a final total of no less than 357-6. Captain Neavyn was reasonably content with this effort.
Phoenix never really had any chance of chasing this but their opener M. Ahmed gave NK a small bit of a scare smashing his way to 49 off just 35 balls with some quality shots and taking the visitors to 59-0 off only 8.3 overs. Wasif Ali (9-1-24-2) was brought into the attack and promptly removed Ahmed in his first over when the oppo opener miscued to mid-on where Varun Walia took a good low catch. After that the visitors crumbled to 113-7. Vorster (10-0-35-3) was the pick of the NK attack claiming the scalps of the oppo no.2, no.4 and no.5 all bowled. Manjeet Singh (6-1-18-2) also bowled well in a tidy spell that netted him a couple of wickets. In the end NK were left a bit frustrated being unable to get the final two wickets to bowl the visitors out who to their credit, despite having little chance of picking up even 1 point, made the 1sts labour on till the 50th and final over.
A great win for the 1sts but the team knows there'll be tougher games ahead.
