North County 3 v North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI on Sat 15 May 2010 at 12:30
North Kildare Cricket Club Won By 4 Runs (20/25pts)
Match report
On Saturday NK 1sts travelled to North County to play their first away match of the season and recorded a dramatic 4 run victory in a thrillng game of cricket. The 1sts were determined to put right the wrongs in last weeks disappointing defeat to YMCA. NK found themselves batting first having lost the toss, which was fine as Captain Neavyn was going to bat first anyway. On a decent track, fast outfield and in places very small boundary, 250 was deemed to be only a par score.
Much like last week however NK got off to a bad start with the bat. Neavyn fell for a blob when a leading edge was skyed to the covers for a simple catch off the bowling of seamer J. Mooney. If that wasn't bad enough NK no.3 Phipps followed soon after, also for nought, when he hit a drive straight to mid-on off seamer M. Singh. 15-2. In form Manjeet Singh joined Imran Ul-Haq at the crease and together the pair steadied the ship somewhat before two more quick wickets fell. Imran (27 off 31, 3x4s 1x6) holed out to deep midwicket off the leg spin of McGovern and Holland (golden duck) followed in the same over when he was run out in calamitous fashion. Having miscued one into the covers Holland set off for a single, was sent back at which point he slipped and despite his best efforts at crawling back in was out by a distance. 47-4 off 12. Manjeet was then joined by Walshe with NK needing a good partnership to once again get the innings up and running. The pair added 52 runs before, for the 3rd time in the innings, two quick wickets fell. Manjeet (58 off 51, 7x4s 2x6s) continuing his awesome start to the season, batted beautifully once again before he was adjudged lbw to the dibbley-dobbley seam bowling of J. Murphy. Perhaps Manjeet was a little unlucky with a suggestion that the ball may have been going down leg. It was J. Murphy who struck again when a shortish wide delivery jagged back in off the pitch to find NK no.7 Kishan Mistri's inside edge and then pad and then stumps. These two quick wickets left the 1sts floundering on 107-6, scratching their heads and wondering just how the hell were they going to recover and post even a reasonably decent total from this. Walshe and Walia had an answer. What followed then was a brilliant innings saving stand of 117 between Walshe and NK no.8 Varun Walia. Walshe (65 off 93, 9x4s) kept his cool throughout, rotating the strike nicely and waiting for the loose delivery which he mostly punished without fail and Walia (58 off 54, 10x4s) played an excellent controlled aggresive innings which included some smashing cut and driven offside boundaries. The pair took the score to 224 before yet again two quick wickets fell. Walshe was caught very sharply in the covers off the off-spin of K. Clarke and Walia followed in the next over bowled by M. Singh going for the big hit. It was a shame the pair couldn't bat through as this would likely have meant a final score in the region of 270+. Nonetheless a tremendous effort from W&W. Unfortunately NK's innings was to come to a swift end after the departure of Walia. Pyne (4) with a leading edge popped one back to the bowler K. Clarke for a simple catch and the innings came to an end soon after when Wasif Ali (3) was caught behind off K. Clarke. 238 ao in 48.1 overs.
And so despite the best efforts of Manjeet, Walshe and Walia NK were left with a below par looking total of 238, a score that would require a big 2nd innings effort if it was to be defended.
Just like the 1st innings, the 2nd innings didn't exactly start in spectacular fashion for the 1sts. Phipps, struggling with bowling into the wind, conceded 11 runs including 4 wides in the first over. Phipps was taken off and the N County lads were to have a false sense of security when he came back on later from the other end (all part of the masterplan some wouldn't say - see below). Therefore Wasif (10-2-24-0) and Varun (10-2-34-1) essentially became the opening bowlers. Varun got an early wicket when he produced a classic inswinger to bowl NC opener D. Rooney (blob). 19-1. Wasif bowled straight through his 10 overs and Varun bowled 9 of his 10 straight and despite neither taking another wicket the control and accuracy with which they bowled meant NC were only scoring at 3.5 an over by the 20th over with their score on 70-1. This left the home side needing 169 in 32 overs for victory which meant that NK were in with a good chance despite having claimed just the one scalp. Manjeet (10-1-31-1) in an excellent 8 over spell continued the good work of Wasif and Varun. NC opener J. Mooney and no.3 B. Grimes looked mostly clueless against a 'raggin it' Manjeet and it was 'the master' who finally got the breakthrough when he bowled a hapless Grimes (40). 112-2 off 31 overs. NC now needed 127 in 21 overs so it was now very much game on. Soon after Manjeet struck again, but this time in the field, combining with keeper Kishan from square-leg to run out NC opener J. Mooney (64) who perhaps from NC's point of view had scored his runs a little too slowly. 131-3 off 35. Pyne (6-0-36-2) replaced an unlucky Vorster and proceeded to take a couple of important middle order wickets. First Pyne had NC no.5 J. Murphy (blob) caught at mid-on by Phipps and then in his next over claimed the wicket of the dangerous looking NC no.4 M. Singh (21) with a good catch by Holland at mid-wicket. 159-5 off 38. There followed a few heated moments as NC no.6 S. Mooney was given out run out only for the decision to be reversed after some angry protestations on the batsmans part. Also twice keeper Kishan Mistri was left frustrated after two solid looking appeals for stumpings were not given. Excellent glovework from Mistri nonetheless. Ironically the very next ball after that run out incident produce another run out. Attempting an identical quick single to Imran at short 3rd, NC no.8 K. Healy found himself well short after Imran, with a fast whipped in slingy throw, combined superbly with Mistri. 174-6 off 40. A partnership of 36 followed as that reversed run out decision started to look like it might cost NK the game with S. Mooney scoring regularly with a combination of some hoiks but also some solid hits straight and square. With the score now on 206 it began to look like the only way the 1sts could win the game was to bowl NC out. Enter Phipps (3.1-0-29-3). Now bowling with good pace and control and looking himself again Phipps blasted through NC no.8 K. Clarke's (12) defence. 206-7. However S. Mooney continued to find the boundary and the score moved on to 229, now NK definitely had to bowl NC out to win. Phipps struck again when he found NC no.9 McGovern's (6) edge for a caught behind and in the next over Vorster (8-0-47-1) got the key wicket of S. Mooney (55) who played on to a good full ball from young Vossy. Between these two dismissals there were a few runs also, a few runs that left County needing just 3 to win but now with only 1 wicket remaining. With a nervy looking NC no.11 J. Webster (blob) on strike Phipps charged in, bowled it full and straight, the batsman hit only fresh air, was bowled, and the game was won. The post match pints tasted of victory, always sweeter.
So an excellent game of cricket that was appreciated by all concerned. A much improved performance in the field and with the ball sees the 1s get back to winning ways and looking forward to their next challenge at home to Phoenix.
(At the time the scoreboard read 236 meaning 3 to win but the book has NC down as 234 ao).
