North Kildare Cricket Club Men's 1st XI v YMCA 2 on Sun 09 May 2010 at 12:30
North Kildare Cricket Club Lost By 6 Wickets (2/25pts)

Match report After May 2nds comfortable 6 wkt win over Old Belvo the 1sts were in confident mood ahead of Sundays clash with visitors YMCA. That win over Belvo saw the 1sts turn in a competent performance with the ball and in the field, a performance that unfortunately wasn't reproduced against YMCA. Captain Neavyn was going to field first but having lost the toss NK found themselves setting the target rather than chasing.

NK set their sights on a score of 250 or better. Things began well with openers Neavyn and Ul-Haq looking in good touch at the crease as they put on 20 in the first 5 overs. In the 6th over however Neavyn (7) was caught clipping one off his pads straight to square-leg off seamer Ahmed. It was the first of several soft dismissals in the NK innings. 25-1 soon became 31-3 as NK experienced a serious wobble. Both Ul-Haq (16) and TJ Clayton (0) were trapped lbw by seamer Armstrong. Clayton was very unlucky with the decision given against him as there was an inside-edge involved. This brought Phipps and Manjeet Singh together at the crease with NK needing a significant stand between the two to get their innings back on track. Together the pair got down to business and added 68 runs to take the 1s to 99-3 off 26 overs when drinks were taken. Although NK were slightly behind where they wanted to be at this point, the target of 250 or better was still well within their grasp. However the restart couldn't have started in worse fashion with Phipps (31) taking everyone by surprise by hitting a dire short and wide delivery from young seamer J. Smith straight to point. 99-4. An avoidable run out (aren't they all) done for Satchwell (8) as NK suffered another wobble. 111-5. Manjeet however was looking in magnificent form at this point and was joined by Kishan as NK once more looked to get their innings back on track with a good stand. In an excellent partnership between the pair, 56 runs were added in just 7.4 overs. Both players were looking in great touch and were scoring freely both offside and legside but once again a wicket fell at just the wrong time with Kishan (32) holing out to deep-midwicket off the spin of J. Harte. Nonetheless the brisk 29 ball 32 from the NK keeper was a very handy and important knock. 167-6. Another avoidable run out (yes this one too) saw the end of an all too brief innings from the hard-hitting NK no.8 Holland (3) and when Manjeet (80) followed soon after caught and bowled very sharply by spinner Harte the 1sts once again found themselves in a tricky situation on 186-8. 250 was now beginning to look like a big ask. However Varun Walia (27*) and Wasif Ali (26) proved just how far down this team bats in a superb 10th wicket stand of 54 off approx 45 balls. Wasif's 26 came off just 17 balls and included a straight six into the trees and Varun's 27* came off 32 balls and included one mighty hit for 6 towards the canal. Unfortunately the pair couldn't stay there till the end with Wasif out bowled by seamer Anderson and the NK innings came to a close when no.11 Vorster (0) was a little unlucky to be caught at the long-on boundary first ball looking for the big hit. 240-10.

Star of the NK innings was of course Manjeet Singh. His 80 came off 97 balls and included 6x4s and 2x6s. Manjeet paced his knock beautifully and played some great shots, best of which was probably (it's hard to decide) an immaculately timed stroke for six over long on. 240 is never a bad score but given the number of soft dismissals during the innings the 1s felt that they could have set a bigger target of anywhere between 260 and 280. Nonetheless to get to 240 after being 186-8 had to be seen as a success.

What should have been a difficult target for YMCA quickly became a very gettable target with the visitors racing to 65 off the first 10 overs as NK's bowlers, struggling with their line and length, offered up far too many loose deliveries. There was an early success for Walia (6-1-34-1) when he bowled YM no.2 Van de Flier (4) but that brought an in form Ehtesham Ahmed to the crease. Ahmed and YM skipper Streek put together a stand of 126 in just 16.5 overs before finally Vorster (4-0-24-1) got the breakthrough when he had Streek (46) caught brilliantly by a diving Phipps at the long-off boundary. 151-2. Ahmed was still there however controlling things and if NK were to have a chance he would have to be dismissed sooner rather than later. Phipps (10-1-64-1) got YM no.4 Anderson (4) to drag one on to his stumps to leave the visitors on 173-3 off 27 overs. Another 30 runs were added before Ahmed was at last removed, stumped by Kishan off the spin of Manjeet (7-0-40-1), but not before he had smashed his way to 105 off only 90 odd balls. 203-4. NK had no choice at this point but to go on the attack in the search for some quick wickets. Unfortunately luck eluded the home team as YM's no.5 and no.6 Harte (24*) and Lewis (28*) edged and hoiked the visitors home in an unbeaten stand of 38. Wasif Ali (5-1-19-0), bowling with good control, was by a distance the most economical of NK's bowlers on the day.

Certainly it was one of those days where very little seemed to go our way, yet this is not making an excuse for what was a below average bowling and at times very sloppy fielding performance. And of course YM centurion Ahmed is a very good batsman, capable of single-handedly winning games, which is what he did here.

A disappointing result in the end for the 1sts. The team will look to improve on a decent batting performance and improve greatly on a below par bowling/fielding performance in their next game.
